Sam Bush
sambush.com

Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist Sam Bush doesn’t seem old enough to be a musical legend. But he is.

Alternately known as the King of Telluride and the King of Newgrass, Bush has been honored by the Americana Music Association and the International Bluegrass Music Association. Bush has helped to expand the horizons of bluegrass music, fusing it with jazz, rock, blues, funk and other styles. He’s the co-founder of the genre-bending New Grass Revival and an in-demand musician who has played with everyone from Emmylou Harris and Bela Fleck to Charlie Haden, Lyle Lovett and Garth Brooks.

And though Bush is best known for jaw-dropping skills on the mandolin, he is also a three time national junior fiddle champion and Grammy award winning vocalist.

FANDGooseCreekSymphony.jpgGoose Creek Symphony
goosecreeksymphony.com

Goose Creek Symphony is considered by many to be one of the most original bands of their time.  The Goose Creek story brings new meaning to “you were ahead of your time.” The true definition of "Cosmic American Music". Unlike many of the other bands from the 70s Goose Creek hasn’t mellowed or gotten more commercial. They aren’t resting on old laurels, if anything they’ve gotten looser and more varied. The band still keeps an active touring schedule and enjoys a loyal fanbase similar to what the Grateful Dead and Jimmy Buffett have experienced over the years.

FANDMissyRaines.jpgMissy Raines & the New Hip
missyraines.com

It’s sometimes said that great bass playing vanishes, supporting the music without drawing attention to itself. But history also shows us that when the best bass players step forward as band leaders, remarkable things can happen. That’s why it’s time to pay heed to Missy Raines and the New Hip. Missy, a trailblazer in her field for as long as she’s been playing music, formed this dynamic quintet to bridge the musical worlds of newgrass, jazz, singer/songwriter and any others they take a notion to explore. The New Hip puts Raines on a path trod by bass player/band leader/composers like Ray Brown, Charles Mingus and Edgar Meyer. If her past is any indication, she’ll be one more shining example of why it’s not wise to underestimate the musician – male or female – back there in the band with the big, low instrument.

FANDMyDearDisco.jpgMy Dear Disco
dancethink.com

My Dear Disco's influences have coalesced to create what the band has coined "Dancethink Music." Some might call it high-brow guilty-pleasure dance music.  At the end of the day, it's hard to find a genre to apply to a band of music degrees shamelessly enamored with catchy hooks, who sing through a giant megaphone in French, shred Van Halen on electrified Irish bagpipes, write 80's-esque dance-rock anthems in 5/4, and re-sample themselves doing it live -- all to create a modern-day musical Frankenstein that will pull even the most self-conscious listener on to the dance floor.

VVRobertJospe.jpg Robert Jospe with John D'earth & Royce Campbell
robertjospe.com

Drummer Robert Jospé, known for his inventive use of rhythmic styles leads an all star band with trumpeter John D'earth, guitarist Royce Campbell and bassist Randall Pharr. Known individually for their many national and international performances and recordings, this sizzling quartet plays a wide variety of funk, latin and swinging instrumental jazz hits and classics.

FFDangermuffin.jpgDangermuffin
dangermuffinmusic.com

Sometimes a band sticks in your mind like good batter sticks to your ribs. A memorable name helps, and Dangermuffin is no pushover of a moniker. But it's the round-the-fire looseness, yet still polished groove, that leaves the Charleston-based trio's catchy hooks lingering in our ears. Dangermuffin is delicious from the first bite, but be certain to give a closer listen to the depth of songwriter Dan Lotti's lyrics.

FANDDJWilliams.jpgDJ Williams Projekt
djwilliamsmusic.com

No, he's not a DJ, that is his name! The DJ Williams Projekt, hailing from Richmond, VA, is probably one of the fastest rising bands on the scene right now. When you combine a tight groovin' rhythm section, sweet horn lines, and an amazing guitar player player who plays with honest to God soul, you've got yourself a solid winner when it comes to entertaining a crowd. Complex or simple, Williams's lines become funk chops, picking up speed one minute and slamming a 180 on a dime the next with the "Projekt" backing it up all along and enhancing the ride. The band  is best described as "a soulful ensemble of jazz, on a melodic R&B vibe, laced with a grooved down hip hop back beat."

FANDButchRobins.jpgButch Robins' Imagination
myspace.com/butchrobins

Hailing from the Celtic descended southeastern US, Butch has established himself as an instrumental innovator and explorer. Described by Tony Trischka as a musical chameleon, Butch’s musical diversity was further evidenced in the Bluegrass world by his opposite ends of the spectrum inclusion as banjoist for Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys and bassist for the New Grass Revival. As one of the busiest of Nashville’s freelance banjo players, Butch played live performances with such musical giants as Leon Russell and Harry James. The turn of the century signaled a transition from the “introverted master of an extroverted instrument” to performer/entertainer and teacher. Most recently Butch has formed a new ensemble, Butch Robins’ Imagicnation.  Butch is joined by Tom Ohmsen (Mandolin), Kris Hodges (Drums, Percussion and Vocals) and John McBroom (Bass and Vocals) for his next Imagicnation.

FANDBlueMule.jpgBlue Mule
bluemulemusic.com

Blue Mule is Tom Ohmsen (Mandolin), Tim Rhodes (Banjo), Eli Williams (Guitar, Bass and Vocals) and John McBroom (Bass, Guitar and Vocals).
Blue Mule works from a bluegrass foundation and plays music from a wide range of genres and styles.  Over the past six years, Blue Mule has toured the Mid-Atlantic region and released two projects from Flat Five Press and Recording. 2005’s “Enter the Mule”, 2007’s “Scratchy”, and their third is in line for a 2010 summer release.  Enjoying the freedom to play for the music’s sake, Blue Mule has worked hard to absorb the lessons of their heroes and role models-legends of the contemporary acoustic music scene such as Sam Bush, David Grisman, Tony Rice and Bela Fleck, to name a few.   A Blue Mule performance is one of intensity, spontaneity and the pursuit of "playing that lick just a little bit better than the night before!"
